As I've mentioned a couple times before, I've been taking a leadership class at my church these past few weeks, and it's been amazing. I realized I’d forgotten what it's like to take a class that encourages self-reflection and forces you to examine the depths of your heart. I so needed this class for this season of my life. But honestly, I think we need that kind of reflection for every season.

One of my favorite topics we’ve covered in this class is the topic of identity. That’s what I love about taking leadership classes at church as opposed to anywhere else - they tackle the issues of the heart like integrity and character that other curriculum can't. Having a healthy heart is the foundation for being a good leader. And that's why I think it's such a necessary thing to examine.

So, moment of truth: is my heart perfectly healthy?

No. Heck no. I almost want to laugh at that question. I’m far from perfect. I still have issues I’m learning to work on, and I'm definitely still a work in progress. But understanding that is the first step to growing. So I’m thankful that this class is helping me get there. :)

As for the issue of identity, a big thing we’ve been covering is how an unhealthy sense of identity will inevitably demonstrate itself in an unhealthy form of leadership. Being envious of those we lead, not having the courage to do the right thing, being afraid to speak up in authority - all of those things go back to our sense of personal identity.

So it’s crucial that before anything else we have a healthy understanding of who we are. And like we’ve studied in this class, the best way to understand that is to go back to what the Bible says about us.

Below are a few of those promises as listed by the book we're reading. I wanted to share them with you so you get a chance to examine for yourself if you truly believe these. If you don't, it's okay. I don't think any of us have a perfect perception of ourselves (yet). But that doesn't mean it's okay to stay there.

Ask God to help you have a healthy and accurate perception of yourself and your identity. That’s what will change everything, what will make you a better leader, and a healthier person. :)
