A few years ago I made several gift guides featuring only gifts whose companies gave back in some way (you can find one here and here), and I wanted to do it again this year. Christmas will probably always be about buying things. But all the shopping can feel excessive sometimes, and I always wonder about how to participate in this season in a more meaningful way.
I think shopping from companies that give back is a great way to do that. It helps us contribute to the world somehow, and remember what truly matters in life.
So, here is my list of a few shops with great gift options that are helping make the world a better place. You can learn more about their impact by visiting their websites.
FEED (30% off site-wide on Black Friday)
Founded by Lauren Bush Lauren, FEED donates school meals for every bag sold (the number of meals is usually included on the bag). Not only do I love their mission, but I love their bags as well. They're incredibly versatile and loved by many celebrities.
My favorites: Harriet Leather Tote (I have this and I love it) and Eleanor Crossbody.
TOMS (30% off site-wide this week)
Most people know about TOMS' mission to give a pair of shoes for every pair sold, but not everyone realizes the versatility of their products these days. Not only do they have cute boots and booties, but they also sell clothing, accessories and sunglasses.
My favorites: Leather Esme boots and New York long sleeve
Parks Projects (25% off site-wide)
Parks Projects works with over 50 nonprofits working to protect public lands in the U.S. and Canada, including our many beautiful national parks. Their clothing promotes that cause and celebrates nature, and it's quite trendy and unique too.
My favorites: National Parks are For Lovers sweatshirt and tank
Sudara (50% off clearance)
Sudara helps keep women from the sex slavery industry by providing training and living wage employment. Their products are all about comfort, and I especially love how unique the designs are, reflecting the rich cultures of the women who make them.
My favorites: Aamani sleep set and Suja full lounge pants (on sale!)
This is one of my favorite brands on this list. I received one of their blankets as a Christmas present once and love it to this day. For each blanket sold, Sackcloth and Ashes donates one to a shelter for someone in need. Their blankets are so modern and trendy and would look great draped across a bed or couch (or around a dog and cat, why not?).
My favorites: Arrow maroon blanket and Camp Forest blanket
This shop creates tees and sweatshirts with empowering mantras promoting self care and mental health. So far they've donated over $10,000 to mental health causes and use designs from independent artists on their products. I think they make unique gifts for someone who likes to wear meaningful clothing.
My favorites: Grow Through What You Go Through sweatshirt and Growth sweatshirt
Another company famous for their buy a pair, give a pair model. So far, they've distributed over 5 million pairs of glasses to people in need of them. Obviously a very trendy brand as well. I also love that they let you try 5 frames at home for free. Am I the only one who thinks it would make a really cool present to get to pick out a pair of sunglasses out of 5 different options?
My Favorites: Tilley sunglasses in cognac tortoise and Raglan sunnies in tea rose fade
Tentree (20% off site-wide)
I just discovered this brand but now I really want one of their long sleeves/hoodies. Tentree's mission is all about helping the environment, and they do it by planting trees around the world. So far they've planted over 34 million trees by partnering with several conservation organizations. All their garments are also sustainable and ethically made, which is not an easy thing to find in the fashion industry.
My favorites: Constellation hoodie and Golden Spruce crew neck
The main reason I'm including this one is because the amount of unique gifts on this site is incredible. If you have someone in your life with a unique sense of humor, this might be the perfect place to find something for them. As for impact, you select one of four nonprofits and Uncommon Goods donates $1 per purchase. They've donated over $2 million so far.
My favorites: Personalized Hobby mugs and this Swivel cheese board (also, everything in the Geek interest section
This is another brand that's all about sustainable and ethical clothing. KNOWN Supply works with underserved populations to provide meaningful jobs and skills. You can read who made every single article of clothing on their site, in an effort to provide complete transparency to consumers. Another very rare thing in the fashion industry these days.
My favorites: Wanda dress and Cadence overalls
Pura Vida (50% off site-wide & free shipping)
This shop is perfect for any adventure or beach lovers in your life. I also love how delicate and dainty most of their jewelry is. This company has a great start up story, and they currently employ over 800 artisans in Costa Rica, El Salvador, India and more, who count on a steady income thanks to the jewelry they create.
My favorites: Daisy choker and Star Drop necklace
Let me know if you know of any other amazing brands whose products are helping make the world a better place!
