In the past, I've made gift guides featuring gifts that give back to different causes, but this year I wanted to focus exclusively on gifts for readers and book lovers! (I promise this is not just an attempt to give people ideas of gifts to buy me...)
Nothing in this post is sponsored, by the way. They're just gifts I think people who love to read would appreciate. I plan to also do a post on gifts for book lovers supporting small businesses/independent bookstores so stay tuned for that!
CLOTHING
Every purchase from Out of Print helps fund literacy programs and provide book donations to areas in need. Harry Potter is just one of the many novels featured on their sweatshirts, shirts and other clothing items.
Perhaps no public library is as iconic as the NYPL. Purchases from the New York Public Library's online shop help support the library and its programs in New York City.
For the book lover in your life who's also a Star Wars fan. Every purchase from Out of Print helps fund literacy programs and provide book donations to areas in need.
ACCESSORIES
Because readers are almost always also grammar nerds. 50% of the net proceeds from select items in Modcloth's literary collection (including these earrings) will be donated to First Books, a nonprofit that provides brand new books, educational resources, and other essentials for children in need.
These book stack earrings are inspired by Charlotte Brontë's 3 novels, but honestly they have a very wide selection of book themed accessories. Purchases from New York Public Library's online shop help support the library and its programs in New York City.
Any book lover will appreciate these library card inspired socks, also from Modcloth's literary collection.
MUGS
This quirky mug is perfect for any Edgar Allan Poe admirer.
I'm not too sure about the projected delivery date for this mug, since it's from the Brontë Parsonage Museum, the original home of the Brontës that you can visit in Haworth, UK. But the museum's been closed to visitors for months due to COVID, so any support goes a long way. I may or may not have a long list of items I'm planning to order from here soon...
This mug features blacked out titles of famous banned books, which are fully revealed when you pour in a hot drink.
BOOKSHELVES/BOOKENDS
Book lovers (some call us book hoarders) often run out of space to store all their books, so new, trendy bookshelves are always appreciated. With every purchase you make from Uncommon Goods, $1 is donated to your choice of their nonprofit partners.
These cat bookends are both cute and sturdy, and great for the book and cat lover in your life. Ten Thousand Villages partners with artisans from around the world to promote handmade, fair trade purchases.
CANDLES (because readers need cozy reading spaces)
Inspired by some of the world's most famous novels, these candles feature scents like Thornfield's Garden (from Jane Eyre) and Pemberley (from Pride and Prejudice). Perfect for any lover of classics who also wants to keep their space cozy and warm.
This fancy candle (designed by Whitney Port) features notes of teakwood, citrus, sea salt, cedar, plum, lavender, and leather, and a base of oakmoss, sandalwood, amber, and patchouli. A portion of the proceeds go to Loveland foundation, which aims to help bring healing, opportunity, and empowerment to communities of color, particularly to Black women and girls.
BLANKETS (for further coziness)
50% of the proceeds from this West Elm blanket are donated to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
For every blanket sold, Sackcloth and Ashes donates another to a homeless shelter. This light pink blanket features a geometric print and would make a great decor addition to a reading chair or couch.
Another Sackcloth and Ashes blanket, but with a darker color scheme.
BAGS (to carry books of course)
This sturdy tote resembles a library card from the famous New York Public Library.
Not only is this backpack sleek and stylish, but it's roomy enough to hold plenty of books.
This canvas bag is one of the NYPL's most popular tote bag styles and comes in a different assortment of colors.
MISCELLANEOUS
This print features the first edition art of several famous novels, and would be perfect for any lover of classics.
There are thousands of amazing book related pins out there, but these library card and stamp pins from the New York Public Library have to be some of the cutest.
This energy efficient reading light is solar powered, so it can be easily charged in preparation for an all night book binge. For every light purchased, One Light donates a solar powered light to help people around the world with low access to electricity.
And of course... Books!
For every book purchased through Better World Books, the site will donate a book through several nonprofits. Better World Books also regularly funds campaigns to promote literacy around the world.
This awesome list from Goodreads features titles whose net proceeds support charities, such as The Trevor Project, Literacy, Cancer Research and more.
