Visiting Disney's Resorts

Before I get into all the details of my recent trip to Disney, I wanted to share about a few Disney resorts I got to visit. Fun fact: Though I've been to Disney World 3 times, I've never actually stayed on Disney property. I'm sure I will eventually, but until now my family has always stayed at other resorts so close to WDW that it didn't really seem to make much of a difference. Of course, the convenient location of Disney's resorts aren't their only selling point. They're also beautifully themed. And I always appreciate a good theme, especially when it comes to Disney.

So this year, I wanted to get to know some of the resorts for myself, for the first time. The neat thing is that even if you are not staying at any Disney resort, you can still visit the resorts for free to eat at their restaurants or just look around if you want to. So that's exactly what I did.

We started with Disney's Polynesian Resort because it's just a boat ride away from Magic Kingdom (Disney has the best transportation system ever, I love them for it). On first sight, I loved this resort. It's beautifully built, you can literally see Magic Kingdom from it, and the fact that it offers the famous Dole Whip is a bonus. This is of course the main reason I wanted to stop by here, and that delicious pineapple/vanilla swirl was every bit as amazing as I remembered it.

After the Polynesian, we headed to Disney's Art of Animation Resort. I mostly came here because I had to see those amazing Little Mermaid and Lion King sculptures for myself. Once again, the theming was so neat. Just so fun and true to the Disney spirit.

notice the hyena photobombing in the corner...

I mean, I had to...

There's also the opportunity to take a photo like the one my sister took below with Scar and honestly how can you not? (there may or may not have been a little photoshop involved...)

The final resort we visited was Animal Kingdom Lodge. This was predictably my favorite, and I'll definitely be staying here sometime in the future. I mean, you can see everything from giraffes to zebras to wildebeest grazing from your balcony. What more could you want? Even just as visitors, we got to see a few of them up close.

We didn't eat at the famous Sanaa restaurant, but that's something that if you're looking for a good place to eat, I'd definitely recommend. I've only heard great things about it.

Here are a few other resorts that I didn't visit this time around, but are on my list for next time for various reasons:

Disney's Beach Club Resort

This resort has the Beaches and Cream ice cream shop, and the infamous Kitchen Sink (a huge sundae served in a kitchen sink shaped bowl).

The Grand Floridian

Passed by this on a boat ride and the architecture is truly beautiful. I'd love to see it on the inside next time, and of course have their Mickey shaped waffles.

Port Orleans

I actually passed by this resort briefly last year, but I didn't get a chance to get Mickey shaped beignets, and that needs to be corrected.

This isn't a list of the best WDW resorts, just a list of the ones I wanted to visit for my own reasons. The point is, I guess, that you can and should visit some of these resorts while you're at Disney. First of all, it's a free (minus the cost of food if you're going to the restaurants, of course) Disney related thing you can do when you're not at the parks. You also get to try new food and see which resort might be your favorite to stay at on your next trip.
